Is Artificial Intelligence a danger to the human race?
Hello, my name is Tony Santini and welcome to Imaginary Access! Stay up to date on all things Artificial Intelligence (AI) and or (ML) Machine Learning. Here at IA, we are doing our best to bring humanity into the future with careful thought and consideration to how AI will affect humanity – so as to help guide us in the only correct path toward a perfect union between Artificial and Original Life.
AI, is already here and people don’t even recognize it, it’s here and there is nothing you or I can do to stop it! It’s already on the world stage.
As with most anything that needs to adapt at exponential rates – nothing like a great machine learning algorithm to help it stroll right along at break-neck speed. Who doesn’t love something that one can create once to automate the duller things in life such as : flipping burgers, farming vineyards, mowing the lawn or simply doing the dishes? I mean, isn’t this what life and technology is all about? The comforts that technology has always and will probably always continue to bring us is infinite. Isn’t it?
Not so fast! Some of the leaders of the current technological behemoths such as Tesla’s’ Elon Musk and Microsoft Founder Bill Gates have both been vocal critics of where the development of artificial intelligence, (“Narrow Intelligence” , “General Intelligence” ,” Super Intelligence“) – what ever that means – is going.
Musk believes we need to strongly regulate the development of AI on a national level as well as an International level. How many satellites in space do you have right now? And what is their purpose again – exactly?
While Gates thinks AI and computer programming technologies in general will help and assist humanity but at some point they could become a real existential threat to humanity – in general.
Elon Musk:
“I think we should be very careful about artificial intelligence. If I had to guess at what our biggest existential threat is, it’s probably that”
Bill Gates:
“First the machines will do a lot of jobs for us and not be super intelligent. That should be positive if we manage it well. A few decades after that though the intelligence is strong enough to be a concern”
Granted, as with any new technology or system installation there are bound to be issues some minor and some major. Ideally, the major issues are identified early on and can be corrected long before they must be contended with in a catastrophic event. But then one must also consider the minor issues as these can sometimes cost a business or organization large amounts of time and resources. And Normally, this is certainly the case with most companies or most organizations. However, one must also point out something very distinct and unique in the way things may or may not occur in the technological world – to be more specific – AI or Machine Learning.
There does appear to be a need to approach this particular subject with a high level of skepticism, caution and a stupendous amount of potentiality ( pure excitement).
In coding/computer programming/algorithmic-logic, etc,…..there can be – in any coded story on a developers machine both major and minor issues. And as with other things, the major issues are usually slapping a developer right in the face – whether or not he/she notices this is beside the point. But most glaring issues will be identified early on. So most of the time, a catastrophic event can be avoided. Similarly, with minor issues, such as a bold letter, a typo or just plain logic that is false can all seem minor – and for the most part they are. But I would add that any such type error in programming can lead to catastrophic consequences in the Artificial Intelligence Applications and Machine Learning Methods. And so there definitely needs to be a job well done mentality that exists within any Software Company Developer/Agency. But the many distinguished Tech Leaders mentioned above and countless others that agree that AI and Machine Learning is an existential threat are completely wrong. And as such they should not try to educate the public with this nonsense.
Regulation: There seems to be a growing number of people in the top of the Technology World that favor regulation. I find this highly suspicious and perplexing. I mean these are the same people that are on the “cutting edge”. Why would they promote regulation? One reason and one reason only comes to mind. Dominance. An organization or few organizations can’t dominate what they have no control over – and trust me – they have no control over this particular super exciting subject. For them Pandora’s Box has already been opened – in fact Pandora’s Box has been duplicated, triplicated and replicated a great many times and the only thing separating The big Tech Companies like Google, Apple, Amazon, Gray Matter, – all funded technology by Big Brother and countless others in the upper echelons of “Big Tech” by the way – is Funding.
United States: government Ai budget Federal AI Spending to Top $6 Billion. As of Feb 10, 2021 ( In my opinion, this needs to be increased dramatically ).
Russia: The country invests $12.5 million annually on AI.
China: has declared to become a $150 billion AI global leader by 2030.
These countries are obviously leading the world, but the important key to take away from these statistics is that the same countries that currently hold the most power also have the strongest infra structure to develop AI and ML at rates higher than most. But there is a caveat. AI and ML are not like most other things. In fact the only difference between a state entity developing AI and ML and an individual developing AI is the funding . But it doesn’t cost to type…… That is to say : a person can create something and release it on the world stage without anyone even realizing. What I’m trying to say is that any one individual on the planet can develop the next AI that will change not only how we deal with robotics and solving earthly problems or intergalactic travel but how we figure things out in general as well. It’s basically an idea written so well that you just can’t get it wrong. There in lies the power of Artificial Intelligence.
The only individuals that are trying to sound the false alarm about the existential threat of Artificial Intelligence to the human race – are those that hope, wish and will try to do anything they can to keep this technology unto themselves and for their own agenda. But the fact is,…..this particular technology will change the world and it – much like the planet Earth, liberty, and freedom – belongs to us all.
But so far as regulation is concerned. Guys, Gals, Ladies and Gentlemen, it’s like with a hammer, if you use it correctly you can build a house, if used incorrectly you can destroy a house, or break a table or a hand. You get my point? Regulation isn’t required for how we write AI, regulation is required for how you use it.
